Title: Wicked by Gregory Maguire
Review: When I picked up this book I had heard so much about the musical and the book. It was on sale and I thought, why not give it a try? I love this book. It is a telling from the Wicked Witch of the West’s or Elphaba’s (as she is called in the book) point of view. In the movies and the original book, you never know why the witch is after the shoes except that her sister’s. Well this book gives an explanation to it.
This book also shows a darker side to Oz. That it is not all pretty creatures and such. There is a darkness to Oz and Elphaba did not start out being a witch or wanting to be a witch. The book tells of her journey from birth to her death. It tells of her mother and father, the difficulties they had raising her. It tells of her going to a girl’s school where she learns from Animal teachers and more. It ranges from being funny to sad. You can really understand her experiences through the author’s writing.
Overall, this book fills in a gap that we all have been wanting to know about the Wicked Witch of the West. I enjoyed it greatly and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
